The premonitory phase of migraine consists of symptoms occurring hours to days before a migraine attack. These are common in all forms of migraine and in all ages. Common symptoms are yawning, concentration difficulty, fatigue, thirst, food craving, neck stiffness and photophobia. Studies have shown activation in the hypothalamus, brainstem and cortical areas such as the cingulate cortex in the premonitory phase.
