The prevalence of migraine with aura is same in men and women. Estrogens are associated with migraine with aura as seen with use of combined oral contraceptive pills. Aura precedes or may come with headache and sometimes follows the headache. There is an association between migraine with aura and patent foramen ovale, especially large PFO with right to left shunt. While cortical spreading depression is widely accepted as the cause of aura and demonstrated in animal models, it has not been demonstrated with migraine aura in humans.
